SUPER TUESDAY
10/9/01

The best night of softball in CSA history gave us five dramatic games and after the dust settled, an eight way tie for second place at 2-2 at the halfway point of the season.

6PM- Smell the Glove 11, Widgets 10
In an apparent mismatch, STG upsets a favored Widgets by holding on for a dramatic one run victory.

In what started as a defensive struggle, Smell the Glove trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the fifth. They scored one run and with two outs, Susan Bryant started a rally that saw STG plate nine more in the inning and take an 11-5 lead. The Widgets came right back in the top of the sixth with five runs of their own to make the score 11-10. STG was unable to score in the bottom of the sixth. Entering the seventh, it was a one run game. The Widgets needed only one run to tie, but after putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs, STG pitcher Glenn Schuffenhauer got a comebacker and was able to record the final out and protect the one run win.

7PM- Team McHuet 15, Cleats & Cleavage 14
Team McHuet rallies from eight down to knock off C&C and avenge their playoff loss last season

Team McHuet and Cleats & Cleavage followed up the dramatic first game with one of their own. Since being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in the summer league by Cleats & Cleavage, McHuet has struggled. This beginning of the game saw the struggle continue. Cleats scored four in the first and seven more in the second and at the end of two it was 11-3. The bottom of the second also saw McHuet retired on only three pitches. McHuet responded with three in the third and the score was 12-6 in favor of Cleats entering the sixth. Cleats had appeared to put the dagger in McHuet in the top of the sixth when they extended the lead to eight runs. However, McHuet wasn't through. They got six runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 14-12 and held C&C off the board in the seventh. This set up a dramatic bottom of the seventh. With runners on first and second and no outs, McHuet got a three run home run to come all the way back from eight down in the sixth to win 15-14.

8PM- Chico's Bail Bonds 20, Damn Drunks 16
Damn Drunks were still celebrating their summer league championship and blow a ten run lead

Coming off a Monday Summer League championship, the Damn Drunks were on a major roll. They came out smoking in this game with six runs in the bottom of the first and four more in the second and led 10-0 after two. Then the wheels fell off. Chico's Bail Bonds were able to chip holes in DD's defense and then the dam(n) (pun intended) broke. CBB cut the lead in half with five in the third and in the fourth inning scored 12 runs to turn a 10-0 deficit into a 17-10 lead after four. In the fifth, CBB added three more and the thirty run turnaround was complete.
Trailing by 10 in their last at-bat, Damn Drunks didn't give up. They scored six runs to make the score respectable.

9PM- Pete Rose Bets On Us 16, Serenity Now! 15
PRB gets back in the win column with seven runs in the last two innings

Last season's Tuesday (Simplyhealth) and Wednesday night champs have struggled early this season, and tonight was no exception. The defense had a hard time stopping an aggressive Serenity Now! team and was playing from behind seemingly all game.
The drama started in the top of the first when PRB third basemen Jim Lamorte took a hit off his shin. Shaking off the injury, Lamorte stayed in the game and would later play a big role in the outcome. Serenity scored four runs in the top of the first and PRB responded by scoring five two out runs in the bottom of the inning. In the bottom of the first, SN leftfielder, Holly Anderson, misjudged a long foul ball that hit her in the head. But showing her determination, Holly returned to the game in the second inning and was a major contributor to SN's offense.
The game was tight throughout, reflected in the boxscore. PRB led 5-4 after one, Serenity led 8-7 after two and 11-9 after three. In the top of the fourth, Serenity added for more runs and had a 15-9 lead with two outs in the bottom of the inning. The Pete's bats then woke up with two outs and they rallied to score four runs and close the deficit to two runs.
In the final inning, Serenity was held scoreless and Pete Rose needed simply to execute to take the game.
Sarah Rodehorst reached on an error and Erik Ciccarone followed with a single. Both Rodehorst and Ciccarone advanced to third and second on the play. This brought up Lamorte, injured early in the game, Lamorte drove the first pitch he saw over the left fielders head for a three run walk off homerun and a 16-15 victory.

10PM- Dicks 15, Batting for Beers 9
Just when it couldn't get any better, it did. Dicks pitcher Mike Moriarity flirts with a no-no for five innings, Batting for Beers erases a nine run deficit, and the night ends on a dramatic double play.

After four heart stoppers, the Dicks/BFB game topped them all. The game was scoreless for three innings, with one hit between the two teams. Except for fielding errors, BFB pitcher Michelle Way (1 hit allowed) and Dicks pitcher Moriarity (no hits allowed) were exceptional.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Dicks broke through with two runs off of Moriarity's bat and added five more in the top of the fifth for a 7-0 lead after five complete. But that wasn't the story. Mike Moriarity and the Dicks had a no-hitter through five. Only two BFB players had reached base, both on errors.
In the sixth, the Dicks added two more, and with a nine run cushion and BFB unable to produce any offense, the issue didn't seem to be in doubt. But that was not the case.
In the bottom of the sixth, the first BFB batter reached on an error, and with no one out, Chris Georges singled through short and third to end the no-hit bid. The hit also ignited Batting for Beers. Before the inning had ended, BFB had gotten several more hits, and plated nine runs to tie the game. Entering the seventh, it was even at 9.
In the seventh, the Dicks responded well. Taking advantage of several fielding errors, they scored five runs to take 14-9 lead into the bottom of the seventh. After a leadoff single and then a fielders choice, Michelle Way hit a soft liner to second. Lori Greene (who was injured in the top of the seventh and bleeding from both knees) snared the liner inches off the ground and threw to first to complete the game ending double play and end the best night of softball in CSA history.
