Draft Picks & Trades

The Inaugural Draft - Recap

CSA made history on November 8th when we conducted our first ever live player draft at Jocks N Jills - Brookhaven for "The Melting Pot" co-ed flag football tournament. This was an actual player draft, with captains having the discretion to trade draft picks and players.

The draft was not a completely open format, the six captains (Roger Werner, Todd Walker, Kevin Sharp, Brian Schlossberg, Darren Ross, and Leland Dombrowsky) had to choose from a different pool of players in each round. This format was chosen to give all the teams the best chance of being balanced.

In the first round, the captains chose from a pool of female players and Roger made Amber Pereles, from his very own Billy Otis squad, the historical first pick. Billy Otis had two more girls selected in the first round, Laura Severinsen by Kevin and Kathy Reiff by Todd.

The second round had the teams selecting from a restricted pool of male players. The first guy selected was Brad Hartman by Todd. In the third round each team had to select a quarterback. Roger made Ray Lee the first QB selected.

The rest of the draft went under similar rules. Rounds alternated and the selection order was reversed in each round. In all, the inaugural draft featured 59 players selected (38 guys and 21 girls).

After the draft, the real fun began. More history was made when Darren and Brian agreed to a trade. Brian sent Andy Riccioni and Julie Zeisler to Darren for Kristin Tench and Brett Barash. This made Andy, Julie, Kristin, and Brett the first people in CSA history to ever be traded.

And Brian wasn't done, he turned around and traded Barash and Paula Otto to Leland for Sean Ferreira and Sheilah Camcam. This made Brett the first person in CSA history to be traded twice.

And of course, the trading didn't stop their. Darren made two more trades. First, he sent Zeisler and Shawn Purdy to Leland for Stacy Gantt and David Simpson, and then he made a blockbuster deal. In the first six player swap in CSA, Darren acquired Ray Lee (the first QB selected), Tonja Davis and Pam Coan, for Riccioni, Theresa Harkins (the second overall selection) and Melissa Deberardinis.

In all, four deals were made, 15 players were traded, and three players were dealt twice.
