INDOOR VOLLEYBALL RULES

LEAGUES & TOURNAMENTS


The following information is the special rules for the Indoor Co-ed Volleyball league operated by the City of Smyrna (GA) Department of Parks & Recreation.


The goals of this league are to promote good sportsmanship, fair play, healthier individuals, and improved volleyball skills.
The Current Years U.S. Volleyball Rules Modified in general shall govern play with the following exceptions:

CO-ED PLAY
1.1 The serving order and positions on the court at service shall be male and female alternated or vice-versa.
1.1.1 A team may list one specialized defensive player, “Libero,” By notifying the Referee prior to the game.
(The Libero does not serve, block, attack or set from in front of the 10 foot line.)
1.1.1.1 Alternating male and female service order must be maintained.
1.2 When the ball is played more than once by a team, a female player shall make at least one of the contacts. Contact of
the ball during blocking shall not constitute playing the ball. There is no requirement for a male player to contact the ball,
regardless of the number of hits by a team.
1.2.1 If a team contacts the ball more than one time during offensive action, one of the contacts must be by a female
player, but there is no restriction preventing all three team hits from being made by female players. Contact of the ball
during blocking action does not count as one of the three team hits. Therefore, after a block, a male player may play the
ball back over the net as such contact would be considered the first team hit.
1.2.2 A ball contacted more than once by a team, without a female player having contacted it, remains live and does not
become an illegal hit until it fully crosses the plane of the net or is legally contacted by an opponent.
1.2.3 An illegally hit ball blocked by an illegal blocker results in a double fault, and a play over is directed.
1.3 Uniforms of players are not required, Similar colored shirts are suggested.
1.3.1 It is forbidden to wear hats or excessive jewelry. An exception will be made for small post earrings, a flat band or
ring worn on the finger. If a ring, other than a flat band, cannot be removed, it shall be taped in such a manner as not to
create a safety hazard. A player who wears jewelry does so at their own risk.
1.4 When only one male player is in the front row at service, one male back-row player may be forward of the attack line
for the purpose of blocking only: this male player may not attack the ball while in front of the 10 foot line.
1.4.1 No female back-row player may participate in a block.
1.5 The height of the net for mixed-six play shall be 2.43 m (7’115/8”).
 

2. TEAM ROSTERS & COMPOSITION
2.1 A team roster will be filled out prior to the season and submitted to the Smyrna Parks & Rec. Dept.
2.1.1 A player will not be allowed to appear on more than one team’s roster for any given season.
2.1.2 A player who does not appear on team’s roster may sub providing that they do not play in more than one session on
any night.
2.1.3 A player who plays with the same team three or more weeks will be added to that team’s roster.
2.1.4 A player must appear on the roster and have played a minimum of two weeks to be eligible to participate in the “End
of The Season Tournament” with a team.
2.1.5 If a player wishes to be transferred from one roster to another such transfer will be granted only upon agreement
from both team captains. Rule 2.1.4 is still in effect regarding eligibility for tournament play.
2.2 A team will be considered legal when they have three team members present to play.
2.2.1 For Co-Ed play the number of male players on the court may only exceed the number of female players by one.

TIMING RULES

To allow all teams an equal amount of Warm-up and Playing time it has become neccesary to set a time limit on each game.
This will ensure that each session will not run over and the evenings play will finish prior to the closing time of the facility.

Time

7:40 - 7:45 Warm up for 7:40 Session

8:55 - 9:00 Warm up for 8:55 Session

Each Round will be MAXIMUM of 14 minutes in duration, This includes the time between games to switch courts.
A TWO minute warning will be announced. If at the end of 14 minutes the score is tied, the next point scored will end the game.
