CSA Co-ed Flag Football All-Star Saturday
6/22/02

GREEN/GRAY CLASSIC

CSA held the Spring Saturday Co-ed Flag Football All-Star event on June 22nd. In an experimental format, the Gray split squad tied the Green split squad 40-40.

With so many deserving players, there were too many players on each team to have only one game, so on Leland's executive order, each team was broken into two teams.

Field 1 was played under modified CSA Canadian football rules and Field 2 was played under traditional CSA American football rules.

On field 2, the Gray and Green teams ended the first half with Gray leading 7-0. On field 1, the Green held a 6-3 lead. So the combined halftime score was Gray 10, Green 6.

At the half, the Gray squad switched fields and took on the other Green team. After the teams traded scores on each field, Joe Fassler and the Gray team managed to run a double reverse and after Fassler got the ball back from Glen Walker, he hit Larry Smith in the endzone for the first ever 10 point conversion in CSA history.

The Field 1 rules included five downs to get a first, the "devaluing touchdown", the beer in hand clauses, the random rush count, the 10 point conversion, and eligible referees.

The Field 2 format had the referees seated in the middle of the field so they could get a better view of the play, no line of scrimmage, and no time clock.

Here is a brief description of the new CSA modified rules.

"Devaluing Touchdown" - The referee must call this at the start of the drive. A touchdown scored on the first play of a drive is worth 20 points. Every play that the offense runs knocks one point off the value of a score.
For example, if a team scores on the fifth play of the drive, that touchdown is worth 16 points.

Beer in hand clauses - Anyone who scores a touchdown without dropping their beer, the touchdown is worth double. If they drop the beer to score, it's worth half.

Random rush count - Rushers may only cross the line when the referee says go. The ref has complete discretion when to call go.

10 Point conversion - Teams can elect to go for one point, two points, or ten points. All three must be converted from the 30 yard line.

Eligible Referees - Throw it to the refs, they never cover us
