Camp CSA/"Color War" What is Color War? Color War is the culmination of the summer camp experience. Back in the old days (the 80's), both day and resident (sleep away) camps would wind up their four or eight week sessions by dividing the entire camp up into two teams and conducting a five day competition that covered the full range of camp activities. My camp, Camp Olympus, in the Catskill mountains of upstate New York, would be divided into the red and white teams and we would compete in softball, soccer, track & field, swimming, basketball and more. The competition didn't just include the traditional sports, other events included college bowl (trivia contest), capture the flag, and the famous (to most campers) Apache Relay. Color War always ended with the "Sing" competition, where the teams would present their plaques, which were based on their theme for the year, unveil the team float, present a skit, and finish with the "alma mater", an original song about the camp and team experience. To all long-time campers, Color War was "it". You would wait all summer to see which team you would be on, who would be the generals (counselors chosen as the team leaders), what the theme would be, and how the staff was going to "break" Color War. In the coming weeks, CSA will have special articles detailing the Color War experience and explaining how CSA will bring this competition to our people and transform it into a 21st century "battle" for adults. If you have any questions, or would like to submit a guest article, contact CSA at colorwar@csasportsleagues.com -Leland Leland at Camp Olympus (my teams are in bold)
