The QUARTERFINALS

Three teams advance in routs and 'Team Drama' pulls out a late victory to advance to the semis.

To reach the quarter-finals, Toe Jam had to win a play-in game. The 8th seed knocked out the 9th place Terps with a 21-6 victory. This set up a game with the regular season division champions, No Longer Playing With My Donger. Toe Jam hung tough, but were overmatched by the top seed 20-7.

No Longer would face the winner of the 4/5 game. 4th seed The Dawg Pound jumped all over 5th seeded Tenacious D. The Dawg Pound scored three quick touchdowns and sent Tenacious D home for the season 26-0.

The eventual champion also had a relatively easy opening game. WPOA faced the defending champions, Unsafe At Any Speed. Unsafe had succumbed to the championship hangover and finished seventh in the regular season. Nonetheless, WPOA had to respect their opponent, and they brought their 'A' game. The score was 20-0 at the half and although Unsafe added a late touchdown, they were also sent home, 27-6.

The closest quarterfinal game was really no surprise. Billy Otis entered the first playoff game as the third seed and faced a surging Loose Cannons, the sixth seed. Loose Cannons was on a three game unbeaten streak, and Billy Otis has built a reputation for playing dramatic games.
In the first half, the teams traded touchdowns and the score was 7-7. That was the score with under two minutes left in the game. Billy Otis QB Joe Fassler was able to hit Casey Brown in the endzone late and Billy O took a 14-7 lead. Loose Cannons did not have enough time to move the ball back down the field and fell by one touchdown.

The SEMIFINALS

The semis were marked by rain, wind, and drama

In one semi-final match-up the top seed, No Longer Playing With My Donger, faced The Dawg Pound. In a game that was not as close as the final score, The Dawg Pound got to the finals with a 12-0 victory. On the opening possession, No Longer was forced to go three and out and punt. When the Dawg Pound took over, they responded quickly. On the first play from scrimmage, they went long and hit for a fifty yard touchdown. In one play, the score was 6-0. The conversion failed and No Longer took possession again. They were able to gain one first down, but were again stopped and forced to punt. TDP took possession on their own 39 yard line and this time they need six plays to get into the endzone. The touchdown made the score 12-0 and changed the complexion of the game.
No Longer was never able to mount an offensive attack and the 12-0 score held up for the entire second half. The fourth seeded Dawg Pound advanced to the finals to face...

...WPOA, who pulled off a last minute victory, to advance. WPOA faced Billy Otis, "The Dramatic Ones". WPOA got off early and took a 7-0 lead. Billy Otis could have folded against their talented opponents, but that would not have been dramatic. Fassler led them on a drive at the end of the first half, and with under a minute left, Billy O put the ball in the end zone. They failed on the conversion attempt and trailed 7-6. It looked like that would be the halftime score, but WPOA got greedy. An ill advised pass in the middle of the field was intercepted by Matt Sayre of Billy Otis and Sayre turned the jets on. He hit the corner and outraced three WPOA players to the endzone for a 20 yard interception return for a touchdown. The conversion failed again, but at the half Billy Otis led 12-7.
In the second half, the Billy Otis offense was absent, but the defense stood tall. The defense protected the lead for over 18 minutes. With time running down, it looked like Billy Otis may pull off one of the biggest upsets in CSA history. That was not to be the case, WPOA QB Greg Bowers was able to hook up on a deep pass to Stephen Gilbert and Gilbert took the ball to the house for a 35 yard go ahead touchdown. The conversion attempt, a mere formality, was unsuccessful. WPOA took a 13-12 lead with 1 minute and ten seconds remaining.
Billy Otis didn't have enough time and Tracy Phelps sacked Fassler on the last play to end the game.

The FINALS

No one could expect the outcome of the finals. WPOA came off a heartstopping game, while The Dawg Pound had been dominant in their two wins.
However, only one week earlier, these two teams ended the season against each other and WPOA routed TDP 33-6.

The finals was a replay of the regular season and not a continuation of the days momentum. WPOA took control of the game early and never looked back. The rout started on the first drive and in the end the score was 31-0 and WPOA was the champs.

Led by Championship game co-MVPs Greg Bowers and Eric Rader, the final score was the only factor in doubt. On the opening drive, Bowers marched the WPOA offense down the field and on the way to the end zone he hit every offensive player. After an acrobatic interception by Ed Weems, WPOA took over at the Dawg Pound 21 yard line. Quickly they were in the endzone again, this time Bowers ran it in and made the score 13-0.
Down two touchdowns, the Dawg Pound showed some life. They managed to move the ball down the field and got to the WPOA two yard line on fourth and goal. On the play, Weems knocked the pass attempt down and WPOA took possession with under a minute left in the first half. WPOA ran out the clock.

The second half started with The Dawg Pound back on offense, but on the second play from scrimmage, Eric Rader got inside of the receiver and picked off a sideline pass. Rader returned the ball to the 12 yard line and gave WPOA first and goal.
On the first play, Bowers found Tracy Phelps wide open in the end zone and the touchdown made the score 19-0.
The next possession was almost an instant replay. TDP got to third down and closed from their own 19 yard line. Throwing to the same area of the field, Eric Rader picked off another sideline pass and this time he went 25 yards into the endzone. The touchdown made the score 25-0 and the only thing left was to let the clock wind down.
The next time The Dawg Pound got the ball, they fell victim to the same fate. Marty Russo grabbed a deflected pass for WPOA's fourth interception of the game. Three plays later, WPOA was back in the endzone. Bowers hit Gilbert on a sideline route and the score was now 31-0.
The Dawg Pound had one last possession, but they were unable to move the ball and turned it over on downs. WPOA was able to run out the clock and finally claim their first outright CSA championship.
