The 2003 CSA SportsFest series presents:

Summer SoftballFest

the games

Leland gets his first win, but "Becky" walks off with the title.

In the latest installment of the CSA SportsFest series, CSA President Leland Dombrowsky got his first ever SoftballFest victory and Team 1, "Becky", wins the final game on a walk-off home run by Chris Lee to go 3-0 and win Summer SoftballFest.

The CSA SportsFest series returned with "Summer SoftballFest" on Saturday, August 9th. The sixth edition of SoftballFest was held at Aviation Park with the draft pool split into four teams.

Each team played three games, one against each team.

In the opening game, Team 1, "Becky" played Team 2, "The Curse of Leland", on the main field, and on Little Fenway, Team 3, "Our Drinking Team Has a Softball Problem" faced Team 4, "We Have No Name".

The first games were no contest, Becky crushed The Curse 23-11. After The Curse took an early lead, Becky jumped all over them, thanks to several errors by Leland, and they ended the game with a five run fifth inning to invoke the mercy rule.
On Little Fenway, "We Have No Name" breezed past "Drinking Team" with a 16-6 victory.

This set up the second games, which happened to be between the two winning teams, Becky and No Name on Little Fenway, and the two losing teams, Drinking Team and The Curse played on the main field.

Drinking Team got their first win of the day by knocking off The Curse. This dropped Leland to 0-10 all-time in SoftballFest style tournaments (0-3 in SoftballFest 1, 0-2 in Winter SoftballFest, 0-3 in RipkenFest). The final was 17-14, but that was only because The Curse rallied with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth but fell to the Drinking Team.
Becky took control of SoftballFest with a win over No Name. The 15-8 victory moved them to 2-0 and in the drivers seat to win the Fest title. No Name dropped to 1-1 with the final game coming up.

The last match-up of the day was coming up and the title was still up for grabs. "The Curse" was eliminated from title contention at 0-2, "We Have No Name" and "Our Drinking Team Has a Softball Problem" were 1-1 and still had a shot, and "Becky" was 2-0.

On the main field, The Curse faced No Name, and on Little Fenway, Becky faced Drinking Team. If Drinking team defeated Becky they would tie them for first place. If that happened AND No Name won, it would be a three way split of the championship.
None of that happened. After 10 straight Fest losses, Leland finally got his first win with a 23-12 drubbing of No Name. This made both teams 1-2. The game was tight for three innings. It was 7-7 going into the bottom of the fourth when The Curse put nine runs on the board. After allowing two runs in the top of the fifth, The Curse put up seven more in the bottom of the inning to jump to a 23-9 lead.
The excitement was even greater on the other field. Drinking Team trailed by seven runs in the top of the sixth and final inning. They rallied and with two outs tied the game at 20. The game went to the bottom of the final inning tied. The first batter up broke the tie and ended SoftballFest with one swing. Chris Lee led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homerun to give "Becky" the win 21-20 and the SoftballFest title at 3-0.
