WE'VE BEEN DAMNED
6/9/03

The Damn Drunks!, one of CSA's original teams, captures their second CSA championship by rolling over the Sweathogs in the title game to win the Piedmont Park Monday co-ed softball league.

The Damn Drunks are writing their CSA legacy. One of the originals, this spring was their seventh entry in CSA co-ed softball. With a consistent core group of players, they have had a roller coaster ride of success and failure. However, along the way they have been able to capture two championships and two regular season titles.

This spring they paced the CSA Monday league and finished first with a 5-2 record. In the playoffs, they were never challenged. After receiving a first round bye, they mercied Sleestaks, the fifth seed, 12-2, and advanced to the championship game. They faced the second seeded Sweathogs, and the rout was on early. They jumped out to an 11-0 lead after two innings, and after allowing four runs to score in the third and two more in the fourth, they responded with six runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to extend to a 17-6 lead entering the fifth. They held the Sweathogs scoreless in the fifth and simply needed one run to end the game and secure the championship. After loading the bases with no one out, the final result was inevitable. Damn Drunks plated the one run they needed to end the rout by rule, 18-6 in five innings.

Congratulations to the Damn Drunks!, a cornerstone franchise in the CSA program, they have returned to the top after a roller coaster ride. After winning the 2001 CSA Summer league championship, they had gone 7-26 in four seasons since and missed the playoffs twice.

In the Damn Drunks! history with CSA they have an overall record of 29-33, with a regular season record of 23-30. DD has twice finished first in their division and three times finished 10th. After starting 15-5, they slumped badly, winning only seven times in a year and a half. But this season they rebounded, winning seven of nine.

Damn Drunks! has already started their eighth CSA season, in the 2003 Summer league at Frankie Allen, and they will try to stay on top of the mountain in a league that features five former CSA champions, two teams that have win division titles, and two more teams that have appeared in two CSA championship games. That accounts for nine of the 10 teams in the league.

CSA would like to congratulate the entire Damn Drunks! team, but special consideration goes to the core group of players that have been their (almost) the entire time. Captain Dan Reeves, Ilana Davidi, Grant Goodburn, Todd Wilson, Rachel Wilson, Mike Jacobs, Michelle Sharp, Ryan Sharp, and Lance Grooms.
