IS THAT VELVET? OH YEAH! Velvet Love Pants (Bye Week in the Winter season), shuts out the top two seeds on the way to their second straight Co-ed Recreational Flag Football championship. Velvet came into the Spring season after an undefeated campaign in the Winter league and continued right where they left off. They defeated So Many Women to extend their winning streak to 11 games. Then in week two the winning streak was snapped when they tied both R Squared and Lord Help Us. The unbeaten streak was still going at 13 games. They extended the streak to 15 games with wins over Unnecessary Roughness and then they avenged the tie with Lord Help Us. After five games they were leading the division at 3-0-2. A hiccup in the last two games, one point losses to R Squared, 13-12, and So Many Women, 15-14, left Velvet at 3-2-2 and in third place in the five team division. Both games came down to late two point conversion attempts. Against R Squared, Velvet scored a late touchdown to make the score 13-12 and decided to go for two points and the victory. The conversion failed and Velvet fell. One week later it was a similar scenario. Leading 14-7 late in the game, Velvet gave up a touchdown to So Many Women. SMW made the same move that Velvet tried one week before, to go for two and the win. The try was successful and once again VLP lost by one point. In the first playoff game, VLP faced Lord Help Us once again. This time the game wasn't as close as the others. A 6-0 game at the half was blown open in the second stanza. Velvet rode two Michael Walker touchdowns, one on a run and one on an interception return, and cruised to a 24-0 victory. The win advanced Velvet to the championship game to meet So Many Women. The title game was another close contest, but Velvet took command early and never looked back. After a touchdown catch by Kevin Sharp gave Velvet a 7-0 lead, championship game MVP Rachel Kreh made her first of two interceptions for Velvet. The pick was at the Velvet one yard line and stopped SMW's best scoring threat. After that, Velvet was never threatened again. Walker added a second half touchdown to extend to a 13-0 lead and that is the way the game ended. It was the first time in CSA history that a team did not allow a point in the playoffs.
