HISTORICAL SUNDAY
6/29/03

Sunday, June 29, 2003 featured several interesting and exciting events in CSA. The co-ed softball playoffs for the Sunday league were held.

D.O.D. claimed their third co-ed softball championship in three years. It's All About the Beer lost in the championship game for the fifth time, and Peaked In High School was stopped from capturing their sixth consecutive title.

Along the way one player added to a long list of individual achievements, one player had game winning hits in consecutive games, one player validated a curse, and several teams provided unbelievably dramatic games.

In all, seven games were played. Two were decided by one run, and another went to extra innings. Both It's All About the Beer and Team Roger came from four runs down in the top of the seventh to tie the game or take the lead, and the championship game was won on a hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

The most intriguing match-up featured five time defending champion, and top seeded, Peaked In High School against eighth seeded Team Roger (captained by CSA VP Roger Werner). Peaked had won 28 of their last 29 games and won five consecutive CSA championships. Team Roger lost to Peaked in the regular season 19-4, but that day they were without their starting pitcher, Mike Muzik.

In the game, Team Roger jumped out early and Muzik cemented his status and the number one dynasty buster in CSA history. Team Roger blew out Peaked 16-4 and ended their attempt for a sixth consecutive CSA co-ed softball championship.

In the process, Muzik added to an impressive resume of individual accomplishments. Muzik is the only player ever to win a championship with both CSA directors, Roger (Summer 2001) and Leland (Fall 2001). He is the only starting pitcher to win both a co-ed and a men's league championship (Co-ed - Fall 2001, Men's - Spring 2003). Mike was also the starting pitcher for Can O Whoop Ass when they stopped The Independents record winning streak at 21 games (5/15/03) and he was the starting pitcher for Team Roger when they stopped Peaked In High School's record playoff winning streak at 13 games and five championships.

D.O.D. ran their playoff winning streak to nine games (tying the current record held by The Independents) and made their all-time playoff record 12-1. They also became only the third franchise in CSA history with three championships. Click here for a complete D.O.D. championship recap

It's All About the Beer fell in the championship game for the fifth time in six seasons. They tied the record for most championship game appearances in CSA history. Click here for a complete IAAB championship recap

Steve Swaney set a record that is unlikely to be duplicated anytime soon. The championship game co-MVP became the first player in CSA history to have game winning walk-off hits in the seventh inning of consecutive playoff games.

On the not so bright side, one player had the dubious distinction of losing in a co-ed championship game for the seventh time. Chad Wade, who has several CSA distinctions, including 2001 Captain of the Year, #3 on the 2001-2002 Top Ten list, three men's league championships, and the "Chad Wade Strike Out Award", simply can not win in a co-ed title game. Chad is now zero for seven in co-ed championship games.
He has lost five times with It's All About the Beer and once with Drew Sucks in softball, and once with L.C.W. in flag football. "Stillin Second" has more title game losses than any other player in CSA history.
