2002 Year in Review

"Welcome to the Revolution."

CSA came on the scene in 2001, but it was in 2002 that we really made our mark. Because of all of you, CSA became bigger, better, and more diverse. And it is only going to get better, even after the resignation of CSA Sports Leagues Executive Director, Leland Dombrowsky, CSA is primed to make 2003 the most exciting year yet. But before we get to that, we want to recap 2002.

Some of the great moments from the entire year

In 2002, CSA sanctioned 1,587 games and had 2,627 players participate.

The breakout program for CSA in 2002 was Co-ed Flag Football. In 2001 we ran two leagues, in 2002 we ran ten. The level of play was elevated and new traditions were started. In all CSA had 13 flag football leagues and one very popular tournament.

If Flag Football was the breakout program for CSA, Softball was the backbone. The Softball program gave us many memorable games, three perfect seasons, and the birth of a dynasty.

CSA did have other programs that may have come in under the radar.

We brought back the sand volleyball franchise with new success. Beginning as an afterthought, the Tolleson leagues became very popular.

In the spring league, CSA instituted a modified double elimination format, and the Sand Sharks were the survivors. In the summer, Spiked Punch, the individual team, was on the brink of elimination. Only points away from losing, they rebounded and surprised everyone by winning the summer league title. The fall league got lucky to finish before any cold spells hit, and Man Up outlasted the other four teams.

Finally, CSA's original franchise finished their season (and their existence) with a well deserving champion.

Karma seemed to be in effect when this season ended. After dominating regular seasons for four years, the winningest team in the AAESL under CSA, HESM&A, finally got their league championship. They faced the first league champion in AAESL/CSA history in the title game (Heery - 1999) and outlasted them the way they outlasted everyone else in the tournament.

HESM&A, playing as the three seed in the Engineers conference, won a thriller in the conference championship to get to the final game. They beat Haines, Gipson in a winner take all game to come out on top of the double elimination tournament. This got them to the league championship against Heery. Heery got their in the same manner that HESM&A did. After dropping the first game of the conference championship, Heery squeaked out a win against Niles Bolton in a winner take all game to win the Architects conference title.

The game marked the end of a very successful four year run for the AAESL under CSA.

CSA Social Events

The Social Events program was stronger than ever in 2002. We hosted 11 happy hours at CJ's Landing, Buckhead Saloon, Lulu's Bait Shack, and the since closed Dixie Tavern and Tin Roof Cantina. We may have charged our champions to get in to the parties, but obviously we had more than two parties, and way more than 30 people showed up.

We finished the year with the 2002 Awards Party on December 13th. There we announced the first ever CSA Top Ten list and gave honored people awards for accomplishment throughout the year.

The social events program can attribute much of its success to the wildly popular picture pages that CSA posts after each event. Many people have become "famous" because of these pictures.

CSA SportsFests

A main part of the innovative programming of CSA is the SportsFests series. In 2002 this included two SoftballFests, The Kickball Tourney, and the inaugural Melting Pot Flag Football Tournament.

Awards

CSA is the originator of the concept of giving out awards for achievement throughout the entire year. For the second year we chose the Team, Franchise, Captain, and Game, of the Year. And in 2002 we added awards for Official of the Year, and the CSAer. We also named the inaugural Top Ten List.
