2002 Year in Review SPORTSFESTS SoftballFest is the original. It introduced the draft concept to intramural tournaments and has grown with every event. SoftballFest 2K2 - The Opening Act was held on July 20. With 56 participants, it broke the previous SportsFest mark for participation, set at Winter SoftballFest. It also was the first time the event expanded to five teams. The event was won by Todd, You Suck, who went a perfect 4-0 on the day. Tradition was also started by "Smell the Barrel", when they created "Pass the Bottle". The Kickball Tourney, held August 3rd, was the first SportsFest not to use the blind draft format. Seven teams participated in the inaugural event. With 73 players, it blew away the SportsFest participation record. Won by Ball Bangers, the event was noteworthy for the "Mandatory Beer Time-out" and a very intoxicated director. SoftballFest Act 2 was held five weeks later. With 55 participants, the fourth installment cemented SoftballFest as the premier "drinking softball tournament." This event was won by Thank God Jill Wasn't On Our Team, who swept three games. The tradition of "Pass the Bottle" was resurrected by "Our Third Base Coach is a Bum". My favorite of all the SportsFests was "The
Melting Pot". The first tournament ever to use a live draft to select the teams. 67
players were included in a draft pool and six teams were formed with live selections on a
round by round basis. Not only did the captains get to select all their players, but teams
were also allowed to trade players as well. People that will forever be etched in CSA
history include, Amber Pereles, who was the historic first selection. Andy Riccioni, Julie
Zeisler, Brett Barash, and Kristin Tench who were part of the first trade in CSA history
and Edward Casey, who was the first Mr. Irrelevant (as the last selection in the draft). |
